About the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures
Welcome to the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures (LLC). It has been a great privilege for me to be involved in the exciting project of creating the School within the broader project of uniting the former UMIST and Victoria University of Manchester in the new University of Manchester, which was founded in October 2004.
LLC brings together all-language-based disciplines on the campus, underpinned by excellent facilities such as the University Language Centre, John Rylands University Library and the School's Centre for Graduate Studies, to create one of the largest concentrations of high-quality research and teaching in the UK. Like the University in general, we have exciting and ambitious plans for the rapid enhancement of our huge, inherited assets, represented in particular by our excellent students and staff.
The School houses a number of linguistic and cultural agencies of partner states, including the UK's second Confucius Institute, the Goethe Institute Examination Centre, and the Spanish Embassy Educational Resource Centre. We host teaching staff supplied through partnerships with other overseas agencies, including: Camoes Institute (Portugal); the German Academic Exchange Service; the Austrian Institute; St Benedict School (St Petersburg); Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch/Belgian agency); the Italian Ministry of Education. We bring together a wide range of linguistic and cultural expertise and we aim to promote the study of languages at Manchester as a beacon for international understanding and cultural exchange.
