CTIS has an established international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching in translation and interpreting studies and intercultural communication.
CTIS has the largest concentration of translation and interpreting studies specialists in the UK and among the largest worldwide. Publications by CTIS members constitute standard references in the field, including the Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies, In Other Words, Translation and Conflict: A Narrative Account, Introducing Corpora in Translation Studies, and The Translator.
In 1995 CTIS launched its first postgraduate course in translation studies. With its unique combination of research and practice-oriented course units, our MA in Translation and Interpreting Studies is one of the most comprehensive translation MAs offered by a UK institution. In 2011 we launched an MA in Conference Interpreting for Arabic, Chinese, French, German and Spanish. Find out more about both MA programmes.
With more than 20 PhD students, CTIS provides a vibrant environment for doctoral study, offering unique opportunities for research both in core areas of translation studies and at its interdisciplinary cutting edge. Find out more about PhD programmes.
Dr Chris Rundle (University of Bologna at Forli, Italy), Professor Ebru Diriker (University of Bogacizi, Turkey) and Professor Amanda Hopkinson hold hononary appointments at CTIS. Their appointment facilitates very fruitful international collaboration in teaching and research.
Each year CTIS hosts international academic visitors who spend a period of research leave - from two weeks to a year - at the University of Manchester and who thus contribute to CTIS's vibrant intellectual environment.
