China and Its Others: Knowledge Transfer and Representations of China and the West
On the 28-29 June 2008, James St. André of the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies and Peng Hsiao-yen of the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy, Academia Sinica, Taiwan jointly organized a workshop entitled "China and Its Others: Knowledge Transfer and Representations of China and the West", thanks to a joint grant from the British Academy and Academia Sinica, Taiwan. Additional support was provided by CTIS and by the Centre for Chinese Studies. The workshop was held here in Manchester at the Chancellor's Hotel, with participants from the UK, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the US giving fourteen presentations on the history and theory of translation between China and Europe and North America, from the 18th to the 20th century. The papers are currently being revised, and at the end of the year will be submitted to St. Jerome Publishing as an edited volume. Plans are also underway for a follow-up research project in this area, again to be led by James and Hsiao-yen.
