George Kollias, technical writer

George graduated in 2002 and has worked as a technical writer in Greece

My background was in languages: I had a degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Athens, Greece. I could speak Greek and English. I had military experience (18 months) as well as experience in journalism (1 year). Translation seemed the obvious choice for postgraduate studies as it combined both my competences in languages and my interest in high-tech and the emerging online translation market.

The academic infrastructure of the university was impressive, as was the ability of the faculty to guide me through my interests and aid me in writing a meaningful dissertation, which was the most intriguing and rewarding experience of the programme. Living in Manchester was also a great multicultural experience, especially as the city was undergoing a transformation for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

I have worked in two software companies in Greece as a Technical Writer and as a Technical Proposals Writer. My studies were critical in enabling me to translate content not only across languages (Greek—-English) but also across disciplines (from technical requirements to user documentation or official RTPs -Response to Proposals). My work involved collaboration with a multitude of cross-functional teams comprising people from different departments in multinational companies (Marketing, Legal, Financial, Software Development) in order to create usable and meaningful texts.
