Dr Khaled Al-Shehari, Durham University
Khaled completed a Masters in Manchester before continuing to doctoral studies, obtaining his PhD in 2000 for a study of the translation of advertising texts into Arabic. He now teaches at Durham University
I still remember how much pressure I underwent to finish my thesis. At the same time, I remember how well organized and helpful my supervisor was, always giving me a lot of useful feedback on my writing.
Manchester is a very friendly city; having colleagues from different parts of the world makes you feel at home.
After obtaining my PhD from CTIS, I went back home to Yemen where I worked as an Assistant Professor of ELT and Translation in Sana'a University. I also worked as a parttime lecturer of translation in other universities in Yemen. In addition, I did freelance translations for different clients. In 2007 I moved to the UK for a job at Durham University, teaching Arabic (to BA students) and General Translation and Legal Translation (to MA students).
Having a PhD in translation studies from CTIS listed on my CV has played an important role for me in getting positions at universities in different parts of the world, I believe. I always feel proud of having my PhD from CTIS and I still have very good links with my former supervisor and staff at CTIS.
