Stefania graduated in 2007 and now works full-time on a research project in Italy

I completed my degree in foreign languages in 2004 and after that got some professional experience related to translation. However, during those years I felt that the knowledge acquired in my previous studies was not deep enough to face properly the tasks I was required to carry out. That's why I decided to attend the MA in Translation Studies at the University of Manchester in 2006/07.

During my year in Manchester, I had the opportunity to live in one of the biggest cities in the UK and to study in one of its best universities. I have to admit that everything looked pretty scary and overwhelming at the beginning: a huge city to get used to, a completely different university organization from the one I was coming from, with so many services provided, so many passwords to remember, so many students around!

Nonetheless, I soon realized that the opportunity I had been given represented a challenging and worthwhile experience, and at the end it proved to be a very constructive experience both at a personal and,  most of all, at an academic level. Classes were very interesting and stimulating, and my teachers were always very approachable and supportive. Even the administrative staff were very helpful and the resources offered for our studies were always available and of a high standard - the John Ryland library was basically my second home!

My former university made available a research position in the field of corpus linguistics and translation. My interview was held in October 2007 and fortunately I was offered the place! I started working in December 2007, and so the MA proved to be immediately helpful in my career.

The research project will involve the construction and analysis of vast parallel corpora of LSPs (languages for special purposes) in English and Italian. The most interesting aspect of my job is the fact that, even if everything still looks a bit confused and I still have a lot to learn, I now have the opportunity to apply some of the knowledge I gained in my MA. At least this is what I am willing to do and what I hope I'll be able to achieve in the end!
