Dr Wallace Chen, Monterey Institute of International Studies
I came to CTIS and Manchester to immerse myself in its world-class research environment, focusing on the area of corpus-based translation studies which was not available elsewhere. The faculty in CTIS was another reason that motivated me to study here. The teaching staff in CTIS were dedicated and enthusiastic, helping me all the way to the completion of my PhD research.
Manchester is a vibrant metropolis. People living there come from different ethnic background, which is a vital aspect that significantly contributes to the study of intercultural communication and translation. I enjoyed everything offered in Manchester during my four years of study there, from helpful staff and dynamic research resources to great food and entertainment in the city. In fact, living in Manchester has been and will always be the most memorable time in my life.
After graduating from Manchester, I went back to my university in Taiwan and started offering a course in corpus-based translation studies. The course was a success, with some of my students working on their Masters dissertation in this area which was not available in Taiwan until recent years. I was also invited to talk about corpus-based translation studies in various conferences held in Taiwan and China.
In early 2007, I joined Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California, where I teach translation and interpretation between Chinese and English. I am also working on building a multi-purpose corpus for teaching and researching translation.
Having a PhD from the University of Manchester has been a great asset. It has helped me build my academic career with a clear focus on combining corpus methodology and the teaching and research of translation. This is a thriving and dynamic area originated in Manchester and being developed vigorously around the world, particularly in Asia. People in China immediately associate corpus-based translation studies with Manchester. My Manchester PhD clearly gives me an edge in pursuing my academic and professional career.
