Scientific and Commercial Translation
The label 'scientific and commercial translation' is used here as shorthand for the translation of texts not normally considered as literary works. It therefore encompasses most of the vast translation activity of the present day as well as much of the translation effort of the past which played a vital role in the circulation and shaping of ideas across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Some research in this area consists of attempts to position these translation activities within the field of translation studies and to develop theoretical and methodological approaches to help us to study them. Case studies focus on specific genres, text types, translations, translators or specific ideas. These include studies of how seminal or canonical philosophical or scientific concepts and texts have been translated and retranslated, how translation is employed by news and media outlets, how translation figured in the establishment of genres or academic disciplines. Also of interest here is the study of the translation of promotional texts (e.g. press advertisements), pedagogical texts (e.g. training manuals and textbooks) and popular science.
