The School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures offers a range of exciting and interesting MA Programmes, which might particularly appeal to International students. Information about these programmes can be found below. More detail, however, can be found in the Postgraduate Brochure 2009.

MA Contemporary China

An interdisciplinary programme which grounds students in approaches to Chinese studies and contemporary Chinese society, and prepares students for a career relating to China or to the relationship between China and the EU. The programme covers history, religion and society, language and culture, politics, international relations, diaspora and economic development in modern and contemporary China.

MA European Languages and Cultures

A suite of programmes in European literary and cultural studies, offering specialisation either in individual language areas (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish) or in interdisciplinary themes (e.g. Migration/Diaspora, Holocaust Studies). The programmes' outstanding range and flexibility enable students to study areas ranging from contemporary Russian politics to 18th-century German thought, from Latin American cinema to medieval French poetry.

MA Latin American Studies

This programme offers a range of options from cultural studies, history, linguistics and social sciences which will broadly develop expertise in Latin American and Caribbean societies. The programme is open to suitably qualified graduates without prior knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese.

MA Linguistics and English Language

A suite of programmes offering the widest range of teaching and research expertise in all aspects of theoretical and descriptive linguistics and in all areas in the study of the English language. An exceptionally large and flexible choice of course units is offered, so that students can construct a truly personalized programme suited to individual interests and needs. This includes the possibility of having one-to-one supervision in tailor-made Directed Reading course units.

MA Middle Eastern Studies

A suite of programmes which enables students to specialise in a range of historical, religious and cultural topics and relevant languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish, Syriac). Students can cover contemporary Middle Eastern culture or more historical subjects, including pre-Islamic Studies. The full-time two-year MA programme in Arab World Studies, offered jointly by the University of Edinburgh, provides students with  intensive Arabic language training in the UK and the Arab world. The first year of study is normally spent in Edinburgh, with the second year here at Manchester.

MA Translation and Interpreting Studies

An established programme with a strong record of professional achievement among its students. Combining theory with practice, the programme offers specialist course units in audiovisual, literary, scientific, commercial and institutional translation, for English and any other language. Students can also choose options in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting in language combinations such as English with French, German, Mandarin Chinese or Spanish.
