Samuel, 1st Year Linguistics PhD
What was your background before you came to study at the University of Manchester ?
My first degree was in Mathematics and I obtained a second degree in Linguistics both in Ghana. I was teaching Gurene (a Ghanaian Language) and Linguistic courses at the University of Education before coming to Manchester.
Why did you choose to study this particular degree ?
I needed more research skills in linguistics to enable me to teach effectively at University level.
Why did you choose to come to The University of Manchester? The research profile of the linguistics staff is unparallel. Also my supervisor, Dr Martina Faller, was very encouraging and helpful in providing me with the requisite research skills to choose my topic and write my research proposal. The academic environment of the University of Manchester is motivating and highly stimulating for studies. Above all its truly multicultural environment with a high international student population is certainly an inescapable attraction to me.
Why did you choose Manchester as a city?
The city is simply fantastic and the home of the world's best football club. The city has a lot of attractions and easy links to London and other cities in UK. I love it!
What has been the highlight of your course so far?
The regular supervision meeting every fortnight with my supervisors has helped me to have a more focused research proposal within a relatively short time.
What is the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures like?
Simply caring and supportive staff for cutting - edge research in Languages, Linguistics and Cultures.
