We are concerned for you following the recent earthquake and ongoing aftershocks taking place in Japan. Please can I ask you to read this information carefully and to share it with any other Manchester students with whom you are in contact.
Please can I ask you to contact us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to confirm that you are safe, to let us know where you are currently located and to provide us with a current mobile phone number for you. Please can you do one of the following:
- Email dan.herman@manchester.ac.uk (with your name, current location and contact details/mobile phone number)
OR
- Phone 010 44 161 275 8123 (until 5.00pm UK Time / 2.00am Japan Time) and after that please phone 010 44 161 275 2728 (the University's 24 hour emergency helpline).
Please also make sure that you contact your family/friends to let them know that you are safe as they will also be extremely worried and keep in regular contact with immediate family over the coming days. We will be contacting your listed emergency contact to share this guidance with them.
Additional Guidance/Advice:
1) You will be only too aware of the aftershocks that are occurring following the earthquake and the Tsunami warning. Please make sure that you follow all local advice that you are given by both your host university and the local authorities. The following website provided by the FCO gives some really useful guidance:
Our understanding at this time is that all coastal areas should be avoided due to the high risk of tsunamis.
2) Make sure that you have the University Insurance Details with you at all times:
Policy No. RTT260294
First Assist: Worldwide Emergency Medical Assistance (Royal & SunAlliance)
Tel. +44 (0)20 8763 3155
Fax. +44 (0)20 8763 3035
Email: international.ops@firstassist.co.uk
We have notified the insurance company that you are in Japan and that you may have been affected by the earthquake/tsunami.
In addition to emergency medical care, if you need to seek alternative accommodation, make emergency travel arrangements etc. then the Insurance Company can help with this. Please try to keep receipts for everything to make claims later.
3) Local sources of information are likely to be the most valuable to you over the coming days. The contact details of the British Embassy in Japan are:
British Embassy Tokyo
No 1 Ichiban-cho
Chiyoda-ku
Tokyo 102-8381
Tel. (+81) (3) 5211-1100
Your host university will almost certainly have clear procedures in place, please follow them. We do realise that some of you will of course be travelling at the moment.
4) If you have access to the internet, please do the following:
Make sure that you have logged your current location and contact information with the FCO:
http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/staying-safe/Locate/
This will enable the FCO to contact you with the latest guidance/advice.
Make sure that you have updated your contact information on the University's Student Portal including your current mobile/phone contact information.
www.campus.manchester.ac.uk/ssc/sscportal
Please take care of one another and get in touch as soon as you can to confirm that you are safe. We are all thinking of you and are here to support you.
If you are a parent of one of the students in Japan, please contact us via the details above if you have news on your son/daughter, or questions of any kind.
