Institute for Transnational Studies in Languages, Linguistics and Cultures

About the Institute for Transnational Studies

The Institute for Transnational Study in Languages, Linguistics and Cultures (ITSLCC) was formally launched with a lecture by the celebrated scholar and critic, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht (Stanford University), on 23rd October 2007.

ITSLCC's aim is to promote the collaborative development of distinctive approaches to new ideas on flows of people, concepts, words, structures and cultural capital. One of its driving forces is the continuing need to develop the definition of transnationalism itself, particularly in its association with cosmopolitanism and interdisciplinarity, and in respect of related areas of academic activity represented in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures.

In the first instance, ITSLCC brings together a cluster of research centres and groupings, through which a substantial and focussed intellectual agenda will be pursued. Some of these groupings are initiatives which involve partnerships with the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures and with the School of Social Sciences. Of especial importance is close collaboration with the Research Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures (RICC), which is represented at the level of academic appointments and research in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures.

In the second instance, ITSLCC will promote with its partners and constituent bodies a programme of events and seminars, including invitations to high-profile individuals from outside Manchester in order to further its intellectual agenda. In the third instance, ITSLCC will explore actively the possibility of joint ventures and partnerships with institutions of international standing both in the UK and abroad.
