Study Resources and Facilities
The University of Manchester is one of Britain's most famous and forward-thinking universities, with a rich heritage stretching back over 180 years and an exciting agenda for the future. It is also one of the largest universities in the country, and it is able to offer excellent facilities to postgraduate students. The campus is going through an exciting period of transformation and improvement, with the largest programme of capital investment ever seen in British education - £630 million to deliver eight new buildings and 15 major refurbishment projects by 2010, including a new home for the SLLC.
The Centre for Graduate Studies
All postgraduate students in the School can make use of our purpose-designed Centre for Graduate Studies. The Centre is located in one of the University's most interesting architectural spaces, highlighted in Pevsner's guide to Manchester for its 'Corbusian external stairs and a curving rooftop pavilion & the interior of which is an exciting space with big circular rooflights and very narrow window slits on one side only.' Care was taken to enhance those features while providing state-of-the-art facilities for postgraduate study. These include computers with translation-specific software applications, printers, 'hot-desk' facilities for around 50 students (including workstation facilities for students with disabilities) and secure lockers. The Centre also houses a collection of past theses and dissertations from all subjects studied in the School at PhD, MPhil and MA level, which students can access to inform their own research and writing. Access to the Centre is via a keycode lock, the code to which can be obtained on proof of identity from the Postgraduate Office.
Computing Facilities
In addition to the facilities of the Centre for Graduate Studies, the University has five major clusters of computers for student use, together with many smaller clusters. In total there are more than 10,000 PCs and workstations across the campus. All provide access to standard office software as well as specialist programs, and all are connected to the campus network and internet. Every postgraduate student is registered for email, file storage and internet access. An introduction to the campus computing facilities and a wide range of ICT training is offered too. If you have more demanding computer requirements please refer to the IT Services website in the first instance. In addition, there are specialist computer resources for linguists, and at Mimas, a national data centre based at the University of Manchester, you will find key data resources in support of research across a wide range of disciplines.
