MA in Holocaust Studies: Pathway under MA European Languages and Cultures

Coordinator: Dr Cathy Gelbin (email: cathy.gelbin@manchester.ac.uk)

The MA in Holocaust Studies is a modular programme that aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the ethical, aesthetic, cultural and theological questions arising from the Holocaust. The programme is open both to students with prior knowledge of a modern continental European language at the undergraduate degree level and to students without such knowledge. Specialisms include the question of artistic representation of the Nazi atrocities in literature and film, the study of life histories affected by the Holocaust, the responses by German-speaking intellectuals to Nazi politics, and the impact of the Shoah on post-war Jewish culture and religion across the Western world. The MA also provides a thorough grounding in critical theoretical approaches to literary and cultural studies, and makes students conversant with the methods of scholarly research in the humanities and with the resources necessary for that research.

NB: A number of optional courses are taught through materials available in the English language, allowing for cross-cultural comparison, though progression to a research degree in any given culture outside of the English-speaking world would presuppose the relevant second language skills.
