ELAN 62012 National Identity in Europe 1945 to the Present

The end of the Cold War saw a revival of national identity discourses in many parts of Eastern and Central Europe. At the same time the move of the European Union to 'ever closer political union' has also mobilised identitarian concerns in many West European nation states. At the same time processes of globalization and Europeanisation continue to undermine the power of nation states and challenge national identities. In many of the national identity discourses the Second World War and the Holocaust have been looming large. This course examines the development of national identities in Europe after 1945 using examples from history writing, literature, film, theatre, monuments and art.
