Directed reading course units

In addition to the course units listed in any one year, students can take up to 30 credits in course units from another subject area, and/or up to 30 credits in Directed Reading course units. These are tailor-made course units, devised by arrangement with individual tutors to cover topics not addressed in the listed course units. As such, they enable students to devise highly individual programmes of study.

Methods of assessment

Most optional course units are taught through tutorials or seminars. This gives the opportunity for intensive scholarly work, with areas of concentration determined by the participants and their individual interests, which can be investigated in considerable depth. With very few exceptions, all course units in the course are assessed by coursework, usually in the form of essays.
