Subject agreement in Marovo: Synchronic and diachronic perspectives

Abstract:

This paper describes subject markers in Marovo from both a typological and a historical perspective. First, the synchronic behaviour of preverbal subject markers in Marovo are examined, and in particular the types of constructions in which the subject markers occur are described. It is then shown that some aspects of subejct agreement in Marovo that appear unusual from a cross-linguistic perspective can be explained if considered from a historical perspective.
