We are one of the largest language-based academic units in the UK. We have 9 departments and over 140 academic staff including language tutors.

East Asian Studies

Welcome to the Department of East Asian Studies. The results of RAE 2008 have shown that the University of Manchester's East Asian Studies Department, founded only in 2006-7, has already broken into the highest ranks of UK research performers in the field. Well over a third of our department's work was judged to be of world leading or internationally excellent quality, making it now one of the UK's main research centres in the field.

German Studies

Manchester is one of the leading centres for research and study in German Studies in the UK. We possess strengths not only in German literature, but also in language and linguistics, and in film and history. The Department enjoys close links with the Manchester branch of the Goethe-Institut (the German cultural institute for the North of England) and the University of Manchester's Language Centre is now a Goethe-Institut Examination Centre.

Italian Studies

Welcome to the Department of Italian Studies at Manchester, a leading centre for the teaching and research of Italian language and culture. In 2011 Italian Studies at Manchester secured the highest satisfaction rating amongst UK Italian departments in the National Student Survey (97%) for the third successive year and we were also rated 3rd in the UK for the quality of our Research Environment in the 2008 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise). The leading department in the UK for research on Russia and Eastern Europe, REES at Manchester is a vibrant community of students, scholars and teachers with wide-ranging interests and expertise. We offer innovative courses and excellent teaching and research supervision in subjects as diverse as post-Soviet media, Russian popular culture, and nationalism and ethnic politics in Russia and Eastern Europe.

Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies

Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at Manchester has established its reputation as one of the UK's leading centres for research in the Assessment exercise (RAE) 2008. In the Times Higher Education rankings based on quality profiles, Manchester's research comes out ahead of all other UK universities. The University's resources in our field are among the best in the country. The John Rylands University Library has Hispanic holdings unequalled in Europe outside the national collections, and houses a world-famous collection of manuscripts and early printed books purchased by Mrs Enriqueta Rylands, the Cuban wife of the Victorian cotton millionaire John Rylands.

Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies

The Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies at Manchester has the largest concentration of translation and interpreting studies specialists in the UK and among the largest worldwide. Our MA in Translation and Interpreting Studies is one of the longest-running and most comprehensive translation and interpreting MAs offered by a UK institution, and with more than 20 PhD students, CTIS provides a vibrant environment for doctoral study.
