Undergraduate courses
Chinese Studies - Undergraduate
Courses in Chinese Studies give you a firm grounding in Chinese and Chinese cultural studies, as well as in related fields of history, politics, sociology and economics. In your language courses, you will undertake comprehension, translation, grammar and oral work with native speakers. You will spend the third year of the programme on residence abroad in China at a partner university e.g. Beijing Normal University, Renmin University (Beijing), Fudan University (Shanghai) and Nanjing University (Nanjing) to continue improving the proficiency level of Chinese language and gain first-hand understanding of fast-changing China.
Manchester offers a wide range of degree programmes which cater for different needs and levels, whether you are a beginner with no prior knowledge in Chinese or an advanced speaker of Chinese. Our courses include a specialised single honours course or a joint honours course in conjunction with another modern language or business studies. Students who choose to study BA (Hons) Chinese Studies should, at the end of the programme, have a good mastery of Chinese language (i.e. Mandarin Chinese) and a sound knowledge of modern Chinese culture, history, society, economy and politics, particularly in the context of China's place in the world at a time of globalization.
Japanese Studies -Undergraduate
Courses in Japanese Studies incorporate language study both at beginner's and at advanced levels, along with studies of Japanese culture, history and society. The Japanese language programme is taught by both native and non-native speakers and is a major part of all our programmes. There are two entry points: beginners and AS/A2 level. We aim to provide students with a firm grounding in linguistic skills to prepare them for residence in Japan. At the same time the Japanese Studies courses build on this linguistic knowledge by developing a historically contextualised understanding of Japan. Students take courses in e.g. history, society, culture and religion. Japanese can be taken as a single honours degree (Japanese Studies), as part of the Modern Language with Business and Management (MLBM) programme, or as a joint honours degree with other language disciplines in the school (e.g Linguistics and Japanese, English Language and Japanese, Screen Studies and Japanese, Japanese and another modern language).
Both Single and Joint Honours programmes are four year courses, with a third year spent wholly or in part at one of our partner universities in Japan in order to continue to improve proficiency in language skills as well as gain a first-hand understanding of daily life in a Japanese context. Studying and living in Japan is an intensely exciting and often profoundly life-changing experience. The final year allows students to explore their areas of interest in more depth through both optional courses and (for single honours in Japanese) a dissertation while continuing to work on their language skills.
