PhD title: Femininity and Otherness in Representations of Contemporary Parisiennes

University of Manchester (Oct 2007- August 2010). AHRC funded.

My thesis uses film, literature, media and counter-culture to explore how myths of femininity and of Paris are destabilised in works which highlight the ambiguity between categories of self and other. I adopt a Beauvoirian phenomenological approach in order to situate existential tensions within the contemporary city. Works include graffiti and street art by Miss Tic and JR, films by Claire Denis, Karin Albou and Nicolas Klotz and texts by Catherine Millet and Calithxe Beyala.
