Undergraduate study in French Studies

lecture

French Studies gives you the opportunity to explore a wide range of French-related subjects. We emphasise the development of language skills through core language courses, which include elements of linguistics and translation to help you develop a thorough knowledge of the written and spoken language.

French language is studied alongside option courses relating to different aspects of French culture, history, politics and society. You can develop and follow up interests in French visual culture, which is a particular strength of French Studies at Manchester, by studying French cinema, photography, painting, book illustration, and performance; you can study a wide range of French literature from the medieval to the contemporary period; you can explore topical areas of interest such as gender and ethnicity in France and the francophone world or explore areas of French language, linguistics and translation.

Besides taking on the challenge and excitement of these subjects, you develop a range of valuable transferable skills: communication, teamworking, time management, research and information handling. As a result, you will be extremely well placed to enter the job market when you graduate.
