Undergraduate study in German Studies
If you choose to study German at Manchester, you will be coming to one of the country's most highly regarded centres for the subject. In 2001 it was ranked among the top eight British German Departments in terms of the quality of research produced by its staff. It achieved a rating of 21/24 in the Teaching Quality Assessment exercise undertaken by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 1996 (the last time an exercise of this kind was conducted). We were awarded full marks in the areas of :
- Teaching, learning and assessment;
- Student progression and achievement;
- Student support and guidance.
With its nine full-time members of staff, our German Studies is one of the five largest in the UK, but we pride ourselves on the friendly and personal atmosphere which we maintain in a variety of ways, including student participation in the Department's decision-making bodies and by the arrangement according to which all our 300 students are given a personal tutor. You will be introduced to a range of academic expertise that is amongst the widest in UK German Studies. As you progress through your undergraduate career you will, of course, have the opportunity to focus on those areas of specialist teaching which most appeal to you.
