In 2011 Italian Studies at Manchester secured the highest satisfaction rating amongst UK Italian departments in the National Student Survey (97%) for the third successive year continuing our proud heritage of teaching dating back to the 1880s. Today we offer one of the widest ranges of degree combinations with Italian Studies in the UK. With strengths in cultural and translation studies, linguistics, and literature and history from the medieval to modern period we combine innovative e-learning and the resources of the John Rylands Library in Deansgate and Whitworth Gallery to offer courses taught exclusively by full-time academic staff.

Our Research

Italian Studies at Manchester undertakes internationally recognised research that is wide-ranging and markedly interdisciplinary with special strengths in cultural politics, linguistics, translation studies, and the history of the book from the medieval period to the modern day. In RAE 2008 Italian at Manchester was rated third in the UK for the quality of its research environment (45% at 4* 'world-leading') while 55% of the academic staff's assessed research outputs were rated as either 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' and 95% as 'internationally recognised'.  Recent funding successes have secured over £1.5 million in externally generated research income since 2001, including Postgraduate and Postdoctoral funding from the AHRC and the British Academy. Since November 2010 the department has hosted the AHRC-funded project "Existential Constructions: An Investigation into the Italo-Romance Dialects"
