MA students in Middle Eastern Studies can design their own tailor-made programme within our new research-route MA in Languages and Cultures. Students may specialise in any of the research specialisms offered by staff in Middle Eastern Studies, including the historical-literary study of classical periods, as well as current approaches in the exploration of the social, cultural, literary or religious characteristics of the contemporary Middle East. Staff research interests include modern Islamic thought, the role of women in the Muslim world, translation studies, Israeli culture, modern Jewish thought, 20th century relations between Europe and the Arab Middle East as well as Iran, alongside classical Islamic history, Shiism, rabbinic Judaism, Turkic linguistics and the pre-Islamic and Christian history of the Middle East.

Our new research-route MA in Languages Cultures replaces the the subject-specific MA pathways which were previously available in Middle Eastern Studies (Arabic Studies, Hebrew Studies, Islamic Studies, Middle Eastern History, Middle Eastern Studies, Persian Studies, Pre-Islamic Middle Eastern Studies, Turkish Studies). For full details of the programme, see MA in Languages and Cultures.
