Russian and East European Studies

Manchester has one of the oldest and best established centres for the study of Russia and Eastern Europe in the UK. REES offers coverage of history, society, culture, media, film and politics in Russia, the former Soviet Union, Poland and Southeast Europe, as well as comprehensive instruction in the Russian and Polish languages. REES has now been officially assessed in the UK's independent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) as the best department in the nation for research in its field. Our undergraduate courses offer valuable area studies expertise and concrete transferable skills that can be used in numerous spheres of employment immediately upon graduation. They also provide a comprehensive foundation for further study at the postgraduate level, including our own MA in Russian and East European Cultures and Societies, and numerous opportunities for PhD research.
