PhD Title:
'Visual Culture in Contemporary Mexico and its Institutional Representation'

Supervisors:
Lúcia Sá and Chris Perriam

My PhD work investigates the changing institutional structures for the production and consumption of visual culture in Mexico, in the context of the socio-economic changes that have taken place in the late twentieth century. Nationalist discourse has dominated Mexican culture throughout most of the twentieth century, and helped to sustain the authoritarian system. My project focuses on the ways that democratisation, the adoption of neoliberal economic policies and the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which redefined Mexicos relationship with the U.S. have created contradictions between social reality and cultural discourse. I am investigating how culture is used to confront and adapts to these issues, through administration (cultural policy) and production. My current research is on the work of photographer Daniela Rossell.
