Background
I grew up and went to school in Reading. I always thought I wanted to study sciences at University so I started studying Biology, Chemistry and Maths for A-level, but swapped the Maths to Spanish for a bit of light relief!
Why Manchester and why languages?
When looking at University courses, the more I read about language courses, the more interesting they sounded - with literature and history modules as well as the language itself, and the opportunity to study abroad, of course. Manchester attracted me because the city seemed like an exciting place to live, and the University ran an excellent open day where I got to chat individually with a member of the department.
Year out
I spent ten months in Brazil, studying at the Federal University in João Pessoa, in the Northeast. I then spent two months following an intensive language course in Granada, in Spain. Both were fantastic experiences, and the former ignited a lasting passion for all things Brazilian!
What next?
Immediately after graduating I began a PhD in Brazilian literature/history at Manchester (in the same department).
Where are you now?
I am still living in Manchester. In September 2005 I completed my thesis and began working for the department as a full-time lecturer, teaching Portuguese language, and Brazilian literature and history.
Do you still use your languages?
Obviously I still use my Portuguese all the time. Unfortunately I don't get many opportunities to use my Spanish any more, so it is getting a bit rusty but it comes back quite quickly if I have to use it for some reason.
