School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures

Options

Students following degree programmes which incorporate periods of residence abroad in countries where French, Italian, German, Portuguese or Spanish are spoken spend 16 or 32 weeks studying, working as British Council English Language Assistants, or engaged in some other form of approved employment. Those students who are due to undertake an 8 week vacation period of residence abroad may undertake approved study, work or dissertation research.

Students studying programmes incorporating periods of residence abroad in Russia spend 8, 16 or 32 weeks studying or engaged in approved paid or unpaid work (work is only an option for those students who have an A-Level in Russian).

Students studying programmes incorporating periods of residence abroad in the Middle East, Japan and China spend 16 or 32 weeks studying at selected partner institutions.

Work - Assistantships

Many students choose to apply through the British Council to be English Language Assistants (ELAs) in countries where their language of study is spoken.  The average monthly salary paid to assistants varies (up to date information can be found here).  An alternative option is the Comenius scheme.

Work - Placements

Alternatively, students may use their initiative to arrange other forms of paid and unpaid work ranging from placements with blue chip companies to voluntary work. The School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures and Careers Service advertise overseas placement opportunities and offer support with every step of the application process. The Residence Abroad Coordinator is able to provide students with a list of the organisations where Manchester students have previously worked for the purposes of speculative applications.

Study

Students are able to undertake 16 or 32 week period of study with various partner institutions. The School has exchange agreements or other formal links with the institutions listed below. Some of these agreements are under the auspices of Erasmus, a European Union scheme which allows EU students to study in other EU countries as part of their UK degree.
