European Master's in Translation (EMT) Network

The EMT Network is a network of university programmes offering high-quality masters level training for translators. It was set up by the European Commission in 2009, in recognition of the fact that the demand for highly qualified translators is growing, as the EU and other employers strive to cover their growing multilingual communication needs. High-quality translator training is needed to ensure a good match between graduates' competences and employers' requirements. To achieve membership of the EMT Network, universities have to demonstrate that their translator-training programmes deliver the competences which students need to compete successfully for translation jobs in EU institutions and to work in the rapidly evolving fields of multilingual and multimedia communication.

34 translator training programmes were admitted to the EMT Network in 2009, among them MATIS and four other UK programmes. A second wave of applications in 2011 increased the overall membership to 64 programmes.

Visiting Translator Scheme, European Commission

CTIS regularly hosts a visiting translator from the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission. The visiting translator usually offers seminars or workshops, from which MATIS students learn about career opportunities in the European Union and gain practical experience of institutional translation, editing, and other related activities. MATIS students can specialise in this area of translation activity by taking the Translating for International Organisations option in Semester 2.
