Our Research

SLLC is one of the UK's leading Schools for research in Modern Languages, Linguistics and Cultures. This is demonstrated by the fact that in 7 of the 8 submissions we made in RAE 2008, at least 50% of our research was rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. In over a third of our submissions, the figure was 60% or more. Two of our submissions were ranked top in the post-RAE league tables produced by the Times Higher Education Supplement. Our staff includes two Fellows of the British Academy and we have earned over £2.4 million in grant income in the past three years. Our research covers an unusually broad range, from linguistics, through medieval literature and culture to contemporary transnational studies. We have a stake in three of the UK's five language-based area studies centres.
