CTIS has the largest concentration of translation and interpreting studies specialists in the UK. In-house collaboration with experts in literary studies, linguistics, intellectual, social and cultural history and theory provides unique opportunities for research and doctoral study both in core areas of translation studies and at its interdisciplinary cutting edge. CTIS is currently home to more than 20 PhD students, contributing to a vibrant research environment. CTIS houses the Translational English Corpus (TEC), the largest computerised collection of translated English text anywhere in the world.

Translational English Corpus

CTIS houses the first and largest computerised corpus of translated text in the world. The Translational English Corpus is freely available to the research community via the Centre's web site, together with relevant software for processing it. This substantial resource, supported by funding from the British Academy in the past, has spearheaded the development of a unique research methodology which has informed the work of numerous research students (at Manchester and elsewhere) and various research programmes around the world, including research projects in Finland, Germany, Spain, Italy and Brazil.
